Lesson 1: Introduction

Throughout the course of human history, we have always had an irresistible “appetite” to waste; wasting food has always been a common phenomenon that’s influenced by various factors like economic, cultural and technological developments. However, it has emerged as a significant global issue in recent years, and the reasons are obvious: it happened due to a combination of factors like the global food trade, the growth of large-scale supermarkets,  overconsumption, and the development of advanced preservation and packaging techniques.

All these factors have resulted in food getting spoiled, and, of course, these have led to an increase in waste. Therefore, to address this major concern in a more effective way, we need to focus on identifying and tackling the underlying reasons for food waste and working towards implementing sustainable solutions that will help mitigate this problem.

Food waste is one of the most important global problem we should address; if we are unable to solve the problem, it could lead to severe consequences for our society. As can be guessed, the potential impacts of food waste are multi-faceted and complex. Some of them are mentioned below:

  1. Environmental concerns. One major consequence is the harm it causes to the environment, as food waste produces methane gas in landfills, which is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
  1. Economic catastrophe. Another significant impact is the economic losses, both from the resources that were used in producing the wasted food and the cost of disposing of it. These costs can have a ripple effect that will impact individuals and businesses in a major way.
  2. Food insecurity. Food waste also contributes to global food insecurity. Just imagine; we could use these wasted resources to feed those in need in less developed countries. If we are unable to effectively tackle this problem, the risks will get bigger, and millions of people across the globe will continue to face hunger and malnutrition.
